Maureen C. Hearns , MA, MT-BC

Maureen Hearns is the director of music therapy at Utah State University, having received this appointment in 2005. Professor Hearns holds both a Bachelor’s of Music Degree in Music Theory and Composition and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. She earned an equivalency degree in Music Therapy from Utah State University and a Master of Arts from the University of Phoenix. Currently she is studying music psychotherapy with an emphasis in Guided Imagery and Music while she pursues a doctoral degree.
Following a clinical internship in music therapy at Twin Valley Forensic Behavioral Health Unit in Columbus, Ohio, Professor Hearns worked as a privately contracted music therapist providing services to Utah State Hospital, Silverado Alzheimer Residential Center in Salt Lake City, individual clients and provided clinical field supervision for undergraduate music therapy students at USU. From 2002-2004, Professor Hearns was the research assistant in a study to determine the efficacy of music therapy and other creative arts interventions with women survivors of domestic violent. This research culminated in the ethnographic drama entitled “Finding Voice: The Music of Utah Battered Women”. The findings of this research have been presented at local, regional, and international conferences, including the World Congress of Music Therapy in Brisbane, Australia, July 2005. This performance piece is the theme for Utah’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October, 2007.
In addition to her duties and responsibilities at USU, Professor Hearns serves on the national Examination Committee of the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT), the Professional Development committee of the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI), and the Assembly of Delegates of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) representing the Western Region of the AMTA. She has also been appointed to represent the profession of music therapy by serving on several other state, regional, and national committees and boards. Currently Professor Hearns is preparing to present the results of research exploring the effects of music therapy with sheltered women and their children. A recipient of a 2007-2008 USU New Faculty Research Grant, Professor Hearns is presently conducting a qualitative research project entitled The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music with Individuals Affected by Secondary Trauma from Domestic Violence.
A group recipient of the National Medal of Arts, Professor Hearns rendered over twenty years of service with the world renown Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Prior to entering the field of music therapy as a board certified music therapist, she was a public educator in junior and senior high schools in Provo, Utah and Las Vegas, Nevada, for over twenty-one years.
